With the NZ and Queensland school holidays coming to an end, there will be more space on the slopes and less citizens in the lift lines.
The skiing and riding has been very good – a little bit of natural snow topping up the machine made goodness.
As an old timer, I can say with relative confidence, that the best conditions are yet to come. Late July and into the first couple of weeks of August generally provide more snow, along with cool temps.
So book your gear now and be ready for some great times up the hills.
And never be afraid to venture further than just the local mountains around Queenstown.
There are some hidden gems slightly further away – Ohau, Roundhill and Mt Dobson – all worthwhile and accessible, by doing an evening roady after a day in the Southern Lakes area. Sleeping is cheating, after all. Find some decent accommodation (we can advise), then hit uncrowded goodness the next day! Tekapo Hot Pools after a day at Roundhill is a personal favourite.
