Frequently Asked Questions
FYI – WE DO NOT RENT SNOW CHAINS…
BOOKINGS
Do I need to book before I get to Queenstown?
No, you can drop into our store but we highly recommend booking online. You will get priority access to equipment!
How can I book online?
You can book quickly and easily on our website by clicking Book Now.
DAYS OFF / REST DAYS – ONLINE BOOKINGS
I want to have a day(s) off during my hire period. How does that work?
If you book 4-6 days, we give you one rest day. If you book 7 or more days, we give you 2 rest days. You keep the gear, have a day off, or have another day up the hill on us.
How this works – you need to tell us in advance, as we can’t read minds! If you are going to use the equipment on 4 out of 5 days, book for a total of 4 days. Make a note in the 'Additional Comments or Requests' box at the bottom of your booking form, and tell our team in store, to let us know that you are planning to take a rest day.
Otherwise, we need you to return the gear by 6pm on the last day of your hire. When you decide when you want to go again, come back in and we can get you sorted again. This can be a bit of a phaff, but we try to be as efficient as possible.
Can I swap my skis for a snowboard or vice versa during my rental?
Sure can. Just bring in all of your rental equipment and we'll swap it out for you any time during your hire period. But be warned, there may be a “…I told you so…” look when you come back in to swap the snowboard for skis… Just saying.
What time do I need to return my equipment on my last day of hire?
You will need to return all your ski and snowboard equipment by 6pm on the last day of hire. We have a lot of younger staff, who, while fantastic, have limited attention spans, and need to refuel so they can go out later and enjoy being young.
Can I get a refund if the mountains are closed?
If all local mountains – Coronet Peak, The Remarkables and Cardrona – are all closed, a refund will be available, or we can credit you another day. We are pretty lucky here, that it unusual to get many days where all the mountains are closed.
How easy is it getting to the mountains?
If you get up at 6am, and are on the road by 7am, it’s easy. The later you leave it, the harder it is to navigate the mountain traffic, school drop offs, tradie commutes and the sea of traffic cones and road works that are now a permanent feature of the greater Queenstown environment (thank you Queenstown Lakes District Council)…During any school holidays, it is not unusual for the three local mountains to restrict access after 9am because the car parks are all full. There’s always the bus, but book in advance.
GEAR & FITTING
How is my rental equipment fitted?
We customise each rental fitting. We get such details as your foot sole length, weight, height, ability and experience, then recommend equipment to suit. Should you have any issues at any time during your hire, let us know and we will make it right.
I’m pretty much a Beginner – should I just go for the Older Equipment?
Hell no. You are going to need all the help you can get. Our newer Sport range is going to help you learn and master the basics quickly, so you can enjoy the mountain!
OK, but who should be going out on the older equipment?
It’s our older gear, so it’s seen some use. Ideal if you are only going up for one or two days and you don’t give a rats about looking good, cool or really enjoying your time on the mountain…or if the bank is threatening to take back the car or house, or you’re shouting a ski trip for the teenage kids and they are annoying you. Or the said kids have asked the boyfriend/girlfriend along on the holiday (at your bloody expense!), or perhaps you have the In-Laws with you? Or maybe pretending you still have that GREAT relationship with the Ex – put ‘em on these and feel smug all day long.
Do I need to be an expert skier/snowboarder to hire the Sport and Advanced gear?
Not at all, the different levels refer to the performance features and quality of our equipment. Our Older range is well used and aimed at those just going for a day, whereas the Sport and Advanced range is newer with the latest technology to enable a fantastic experience on the mountain. And even if you’re not feeling like Mr or Ms Awesome, just remind yourself you have bought the good stuff, and you’ll be as cool as Johnny Depp at a Hens Night…
Can I come in the day before my rental to get fitted and take the gear?
Absoloodle! In fact, we recommend it. Otherwise you will be impacting valuable time on the slopes if you get fitted in the morning. Our busiest time is school holidays 5-7pm, so if you can, come in before that. You might even be able to score some night skiing using our gear free of charge :). But don’t be a noodle and come in at 0900 the day before your hire, wanting to get kitted out for the next day. That is called “taking the Michael”. Come in after 1.30pm and we can sort you out.
Which is easier to learn – skiing or snowboarding?
Skiing can be a bit easier to learn than snowboarding – generally. But if you are over 50, what the hell are you thinking about snowboarding for?? Snowboarding requires a whole new fashion ensemble, language, food and lifestyle change. And a lot of sitting on your backside, getting up again, then asking your skiing friends to push or pull you across the flat bits, only then have to travel sideways down the mountain. If you are really committed to it, then practice before you go, by walking sideways, crablike around your local streets. Suggest this be done at night. In the dark. So no one can see you…
Should I wear thick socks or an extra pair of socks in my boots?
Jeez No! A single pair of longer socks (above the calf), without heavy seams or ridges. We have a good priced range of ski / snowboard socks if you haven’t anything.
Do I tuck my ski pants, or that internal loose stretchy material, inside the top of my boots?
No. Everything must go outside, over the top of the boots, along with any internal stretchy, gussetty things, to stop any snow getting in. Having any ridges, wrinkles, creases etc, along or around the foot or lower leg, will cause bruising, pain and suffering. And potentially no more fun up the hill.
